Nepali Tea Traders is inspired by the Nepalese people, who live in one of Asia’s poorest countries and have few resources but are incredibly warm and generous with what little they do have. Nepalese farmers work hard, carefully handpicking and crafting premium teas, but buyers have often paid them below market value and sold their teas as fine Indian Darjeelings instead. We want Nepal to gain the recognition it deserves as a world-class origin for tea. As we share these exquisite teas with the world, we are committed to paying fair prices and helping build a sustainable tea economy that can improve quality of life.
Nepal is a land of lush valleys and incredible mountain vistas, but it has scarce land suitable for farming or industry. With no direct port access, it’s landlocked, and the few roads traversing the country are difficult to maintain and often impassable, so this small nation’s ability to export goods is extremely limited. With a GDP less than 1% of the state of Colorado’s, Nepal is among the poorest nations in the world.
RARE AIR = PURE TEA Despite the challenges of life in Nepal, high in the mountains is an environment perfectly suited to cultivating fine teas. It encourages the tea bushes to grow slowly, which produces better, more complex flavors. The high altitude combined with a long dormant season for the tea bushes also creates high levels of antioxidants for more healthful tea.
The Nepalese people have a strong cultural heritage and proud traditions, but the lack of industry and limited exports have made it difficult for the nation to climb out of poverty, with few resources for building up infrastructure, education or healthcare.
Although the teas in Nepal are considered amongst the best the world, nepalese farmers have been taken advantage of by traders who pay below-market and the resell their premium teas or fine Indian teas.

In many places, tea leaves are picked using machinery, which can damage the plants. Nepali Tea Traders’ teas are only plucked by hand so the plant stays intact and healthy. For higher quality, the tea plants are harvested just four times a year: spring (first flush), summer (second flush), monsoon and autumn.
Farmers are taught techniques and processes that improve the quality of the tea, including which leaves to pluck, when to pluck, and how to create the best teas. They can continue to pass their business knowledge on to others.
Our tea is picked in four flushes: spring (first), summer (second), monsoon and autumn. Each flush (the tea industry term for a harvest) produces different nuances to the flavors. For the most premium tea, only the bud or 1 leaf and a bud are plucked – and they are all plucked by hand to preserve the integrity of the plant. The trade-off to this high quality is a lower yield: The average picker will pluck between 400 grams and 3 kilos a day vs. 100 kilos a day for larger producers.

Tea bushes can be organically grown in places where few crops can survive, and they can live up to 2,000 years or more. These factors make it a natural, sustainable choice for a crop to grow in Nepal. In addition, no byproducts are produced during cultivation, so it doesn’t harm the surrounding environment. And by picking our teas by hand, we avoid damaging the plants like machinery often can.
The minimal processing of our teas doesn’t require heavy infrastructure, massive factories or energy-demanding machines. Our hands-on craftsmanship can be passed down so future generations can benefit from this tea economy.
Farmers benefit both directly and indirectly from a co-op system that invests in building a healthy tea economy. Better farming education leads to healthier plants, higher quality tea and higher yields. Co-ops give the farmers more options, which lead to fair prices. Co-ops also help develop lasting relationships among farmers, producers and buyers, leading to more dependable income. Then the farmers can reinvest in their farms, family and community, continuing a cycle of improving quality of life.
